Chemical Equations
Chemical Equations was a 21 day public art project examining the structure of basic reactions in order to activate a series of projects that represent the transformation of one state or condition to another. Serving as a testing ground, Chemical Equations presented site-specific hypotheses in the economic, the cultural, the spatial and the self, analyzing preexisting potentials and initiating a reevaluation of the unnoticed characteristics of the neighbourhood.
Art of the Danforth, Zone C: Cedarvale to Woodbine, June 2012
Chemical Equations was produced by EQUΔLΔTERΔL, a Toronto-based artist collective, comprised of Emily DiCarlo, Jacqui Arntfield and W.J. Wilson, who created interdisciplinary projects with a relational, interactive focus between 2011-2017. Their projects required participation from the viewer, moving them from a passive role to one that is an integral part of the final work. With a preference for exhibiting in non-traditional spaces and making site-responsive works, EQUΔLΔTERΔL’s projects made appearances in streetcars, laneways, vacant storefronts, bars, parks, music venues and private homes.
